Riversway is OK - it's worth noting that the flats facing the water face north, so sunny balconies are in short supply. Meanwhile, the south-facing slopes of Morrison's supermarket roof gets sun all day.

Best house location would without a doubt be the offices by the marina. Doubt I'm the first to notice it, and I suspect that they will go for redevelopment once the housing market picks up again. Meanwhile, the existing flats are the best you can do, and they are fine.

There's some petty theft (bikes routinely disappear) but no serious trouble. There is litter from McD's and KFC drive-throughs, courtesy of their valued clients. It's just a bit sad if your idea of living on the edge is to drive round Preston docks and chuck your rubbish out of the window, isn't it?

Still, Preston is no worse than most places. In fact, alarmingly, it is better than many.

The mix of people on Riversway is about normal for UK flat-based developments, so you get the inevitable differences between immature, egocentric folk who wish to live like students in their first week away from home, and the rest. The rest - who are probably 'boring old farts' to some correspondents on this site - mostly win out by sheer force of numbers, but it can be a close run thing at times. As in Preston Docks, so in life. It takes all sorts.

There's no natural 'local' - although all roads lead to Morrisons, so perhaps they should put in a beer pump just like they do in some Italian supermarket cafes? It could only improve things. The bar staff at the Ribble Pilot pub to the eastward end of the dock make an effort with their pub but they have an uphill struggle, while the Waterfront pub (at the western end) has now closed and is a sad sight. It badly needs re-thinking, perhaps as a number of smaller food and drink units with covered areas outside? It could become a venue capable of attracting people to the docks , although you'd be brave to take it on on this economic climate.

As things stand it is the marina building that fills the role of the 'long established local business' so, even though it sells outboard motors, the coffee shop there is the best place on the docks to pick up local news and a friendly smile. The ice cream is nice, too.

The whole area could very easily go further up-market - it is already pleasant and one of the best locations in Preston, especially if you need to get to the city or to the station. The housing stock is well managed and, by Preston standards, not a bad environment at all.

i am from a small town called decatur illinois in the US and i am seriously thinking about uprooting and moving to the UK for a change of life. Decatur is very small and boring. How I long for a place to raise my children that they can be proud of. Is the cost of living there more than the US?
judy - Fri 23 Apr 2010 5:11 pm

@ Mathers,

We moved out of Victoria Mansions about 6 weeks ago, and I know exactly what you mean. There are 3 old woman there! Need I say more, complain about anything. We're glad to see the back of that place.

Hi there,
I've just heard that British Military Fitness is coming to Moor Park in Preston. I've tried one of these classes in London and they are fantastic! Apparently classes are running every Monday and Wednesday at 7pm and Saturday at 10am. Visit www.britmilfit.com for more information.
I can't wait!

Hi there, myself and another songwriter from Sweden will be stopping in Preston on Monday 15th March as a last minute trip up to Scotland to perform some shows. We are hoping to tee up a little acoustic performance that night in Preston some place and wondered if anyone could recommend anything? We play folk influenced by Nick Drake/Kate Bush and more.

Thanks so much for your time!

Hello, Just some free advice for people looking to move into the Docklands area. I would be cautious of Victoria Mansion, especially the West Wing. The people there are not very pleasant and seem to go out of their way to be rude to you. Some of the committee members seem to think they own the area.

I'm trying to find a photo of St Oswalds Church, Harewood Rd. Deepdale.
It was demolished a few years ago.
If anyone could email it to elaine.abbot@yahoo.co.uk I would really appreciate it.

Still living away from Preston but still feeling the call to go back there. When I last left a message I was bemoaning the fact that Prestonbus had been taken over by Stagecoach. Now I hear they might have to sell it again - another incentive for me to return! However, what's happened to PNE - from promising beginnings, they've started to slide down the table. Let's hope Irvine can drag them back up again.

Hi everyone,

I currently live in Ashton-on-Ribble and while it is not too bad I am looking to move somewhere slightly quieter (within the Preston area).

My budget is around £140K, anyone got any suggestions?

I am Preston born and bred and having been lucky enough to travel the UK quite extensively, I would not wish to live anywhere else! If anyone can help, I am looking for photos of The Shambles, Lancaster Road, Preston. My parents had a butchers shop there, Shepherds. Thank you for any help you can give. Barbara Jones

Lived in Preston for about 3 years. Did my University there and worked for William hill. Can't stop myself to mention that it is a great place to live and to enjoy the night life. In a span of 3 years, I have made so many friends around.. miss them all and miss the place.. hope to come back when i get a chance at least to see everything again.

I visited Preston last Saturday, was VERY disappointed at the state of Riversway. IT WAS RUN DOWN, verges full of weeds, no sign of any floral displays. The Waterfront pub was a disgrace. it has a prime position but even basic maintenance of the premises has gone. broken glass on the floor in the "garden area", the garden full of weeds, the seating was shabby and ramshackle. I know times are hard but a couple of hours effort would have made the place a pleasurable tourist spot, not the utter disappointment that it is.

Preston has been ruined by a terrible lack of planning. The town has been split by ihe ringway and has been taken over by the ever expanding university. How has it been allowed to get into this mess, the planners should be ashamed.

With ya all the way Proud Prestonian. It's paradisio when you've been away, then come back. Just walking up Friargate from the station, and the smell of the trains, yeah... Preston for me.
billy - Tue 09 Jun 2009 5:07 pm

In 1980, at the age of 29, I left dreary old Preston to start a new life in, sunny Australia. We've lived in WA ever since, but I realised many years ago that the old saying, 'you an take the lass out of Lancashire, but you can't take Lancashire out of the lass' is absolutely true in my case. Not a day goes by that I don't regret leaving the friendly, busy, interesting and historical, town of my upbringing. I would return in a flash if my sons and their families ever decided to 'go home'. Some ignorant folk appear to think that the best way to avoid problems in Preston is to move away, or stay put and complain about everything they don't like. Why not try to improve things if you can, or learn to live with the ones that you can't alter? Preston has so much going for it, my remaining family members have a nice life there, enjoying the leafy suburban lifestyle, vibrant inner-city nightlife, and close proximity to the countryside and Fylde coast. What more could anyone want? How I miss it all. (Oh, and the football team ain't doing too bad either!)

I was born in preston and I'll probably die here, unless I win the lottl LOL. Preston used to be a great town. back in the 60' when we had the church processions at easter, there was a better community spirit then. The community spirit seems to be fading away. Preston is a dump. me and the wife go to Devon each year and it is very nice and clean. when we return and as soon as we leave the motorway at the tickled trout there is litter everywhere then when you reach New Hall Lane you see all the shuttered shop fronts. it looks like Beirut (spelling?). it is no wonder people find it depressing It is time the council got their act together and sorted preston out and they should get the yobbo's out of bed in a morning to clean up.

I SHALL POP HOME SHORTLY FOR A BEER....ANY PRESTONIANS WHO FEEL LIFES NOT TOO GREAT THERE SHOULD TRY LIVING IN WIGAN LAND OF THE UNDEAD AND PIES
millseys mum - Thu Mar 05, 2009 8:35 pm

I stick by what i said in November 2008 but I am very sad indeed to see that Stagecoach have taken over the excellent Preston bus. This is a very retrograde step and Preston has lost some of its individual identity. Imagine if Man U. took over PNE calling it 'Manchester United in Preston FC' or something similar. There would be an outcry. I hope Preston residents are against the awful Stagecoach takeover but I can't see it.

How British it is to slag off a Provincial English City.

Sorry Emo's but I'm gonna disappoint. Brought up in the Potteries & spent most of my early years in various places across the UK, I've been lucky enough to spend much of my working life in France, Holland & Germany.

I've spent the last three years in Preston & it's been the most fantastic experience in my life. Yeah, it aint Bermuda but then I never expected it to be. What it is: - A place of genuinely decent people who unlike most Emo's, have a dream - That dream is to build a new vibrant English city after years of decline. Preston is a fantastic night out & the people just want to enjoy themselves without (in the main) upsetting anyone else.

Some comments would indicate a disapproval of Preston because it is a more cosmopolitan city than most places in England - Oh & I don't mean sexy cosmo like US nationals, Australian nationals etc but cosmo including many people from East Asia but then perhaps I'm stumbling on the reason for some of the less educated critisism. Yes you may notice that there are a large number of Asians in the city but I happen to find it a really positive addition - you may also like to know that Preston is the most Catholic city in the UK - perhaps those who disapprove of the asian population would think similarly of the catholics.

In all probability, those people who choose to slag off Preston are not anti asian, catholic or anything else but I do believe that they are in common with the general lazy, fashionable view which sees any place outside London, Manchester or Brighton as being a dowdy backwater.

The big plus is that as long as this ignorance continues - the less likelihood there is of those who wish to remain unlightened to travel to such exotic places as Preston any many other towns & cities across the UK.
