I'm a Manc by birth and was forced to live in Preston when my divorced mum needed to find work. I hated the place. It's claims to greatess seemed pathetic. I have lived in other places and have moved back. I discovered that somewhere along the way it became my place. Would its detractors kindly grow up!

I have lived in several places in England and in Europe and now live in Preston. I believe that - as life is what you make it, so is the place you live. If you have a negative, cynical and pessimistic outlook you will inevitably see the worst of a place. Enjoy the many lovely aspects of Preston and ignore/ avoid the aspects that are less agreeable to you. NB this advice can apply to anywhere you live and is just common sense!

I was born and bred in Preston and joined the Army when I was in my teens. I returned to the area four years later, married not long after that and now livein a beautiful village on the edge of the Trough of Bowland that still has the PR postcode.

Preston has some nice buildings and it's setting is rather nice having some fine parks, the River Ribble and the port, it's not flat either... something I think helps adds interest.
People who come to the city to Uni don't see the best it has to offer really and like many area's of the country there are drink and drug problems, feral youth and Asian segregation.

If you have a car and can get into the surrounding area's like Penwortham, Fulwood etc. you find it's much better, further away from the pubs and clubs with the drunks spilling out of them... some lovely property too... overall a decent quality of life. Shopping in Preston is better than Blackpool and Lancaster I feel, possibly as good as anywhere I've been. Going a bit further afield some of the villages are simply lovely. I live in Scorton now which is particularly lovely but Longridge and many of the Ribble Valley area's are super for walking or visiting a country pub. All that adds to the quality of life of people for the people who work in the city and don't live that far out.

My aunts emigrated to Vancouver, Canada and they have prospered and raised their families there but they both miss Preston and England in general terribly, despite one being a great grandmother now. My cousin left when he was seven years old but he called his Canadian son Preston.

So to all those smart Alec's out there, don't look down your noses at people from Preston who you feel are unsophisticated and untravelled living in some kind of boring vacumn...please don't because over time you realise that that attitude in itself is extremely small minded... we all have to live somewhere and you can't judge a person's worth on where he's come from. For students, it's a pity some of you saw the worst of it living in the poorer areas and avoiding trouble in the City.. there is so much more to Preston than what you see on the surface. Britain is a fantastic country and everywhere you go has it's good and bad points, Prestons no different in that aspect than any other place. My husband (a former student here from Cheshire) set up his own company in Preston and it's booming, this part of the country has been good to us and there are so many other places to enjoy life in without travelling too far. Overall I think Preston has plenty to offer.

preston, beautiful place. I love preston!!!!!!!

Preston is awful, there is nothing to do in the city centre after 6pm. The only shops that open late are Debenhams and Tk Maxx. It has neither the excitment or atmosphere of a big city like manchester or the quite character of a small city like lancaster. It's a horrible little town and that comes from someone who lives on Winckley square (which is meant to be the best bit!)

Preston is a decent town, it has quite a bit going for it and there's a lot going on, a damn site more than neighbouring towns.

I have been offered a job in Preston that I think I might take - it will mean re-locating from Belfast. I live in a really nice part of Belfast, great shops, cafes, bars etc. my daughter goes to a great primary school and I am worried mostly about her re-settling. Where do you reccomend? Is there anywhere 'vibrant'? Or should I really look slightly outside the city and commute? Where are the nice areas?
ali - 28/02/2008 20:45

Hi Ali, your should look at Penwortham, Hutton, Longton, Fulwood, or Grimsargh, Goosnargh or Longridge, unless you want to live right in the centre, say on Winckley Square.

I wouldn't say Preston is as vibrant as Manchester. It's a large town or a small city, but it's not bad.

Paul - 29/02/2008 09:57

All those are great suggestions Paul but I'd go with Leyland. It's a commuter town of Preston but has its own town centre and not all that bad of a night life.
